Amit Kumar holds a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from Delhi Technological University, completed in 2017. He received his dual degree (M.S. by Research and Ph.D.) in Biotechnology from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 2024, through the Interdisciplinary Research Program. His doctoral thesis, co-supervised by Prof. Nitish R. Mahapatra and Prof. Pijush Ghosh, focused on “Harnessing Solvent-Responsive Actuation Behavior of Polymers for Biomedical Applications,” with emphasis on developing bioinspired, shape-morphing materials for pH-responsive drug delivery and superhydrophobic antifouling surfaces.
During his tenure as a Research Associate at IIT Madras, he worked on dual-responsive polymer systems—combining solvent- and light-responsive properties—enabling effective biofilm removal through mechanical actuation—paving the way for next-generation biomedical devices. His research spans stimuli-responsive hydrogels, soft actuators, and 4D printing, integrating smart materials with bioinspired design for applications in biomedical devices and soft robotics.
In June 2025, Amit joined the Bioinspired Soft Robotics group at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Italy as a postdoctoral researcher, where his current work focuses on the development of functionalised soft robotic systems for soil exploration.
